Before we get to Shelia & James’ beautiful wedding…first a little bit of history on their choice of this unique new venue. Ship building was one of Lorain’s first industries, dating back to the early 1800’s. In 1898 the Cleveland Shipbuilding Company, precursor to the American Shipbuilding Company, relocated to the east bank of the Black River from Cleveland. Over the years these dry docks built 909 ships, consisting of passenger ships, tankers, tugs, and ferries. During WWII the shipyard contributed to the Navy fleet with mine sweepers, oar boats and cruisers, most notably the U.S.S. Lorain and the U.S.S Lorain County. Few know that George Steinbrenner acquired his business savvy and early wealth transporting goods by freighters across the Great Lakes. It was during the ‘60s and ‘70s that Steinbrenner, made his wealth in Great Lakes shipping that would eventually allow him to purchase the New York Yankees. Fast forward to day…only 2 buildings still stand as a reminder of Lorain’s ship building past; the water tower which stands watch over the Black River and the former Ship Building Pattern Warehouse. This 25,000 sq. ft red brick building is discovering a new identity as The Shipyards, Lorain’s premier dining, gathering, and events venue. A dramatic departure from the pattern buildings past, The Shipyards now accommodates special occasions and creates memories for a new generation, forging ahead with a nod to the past.
On July 13, 2020 Sheila and James christened this brand new facility with being the first wedding event held there. We think it turned out great! The room, accented with blue uplighting can easily accommodate up to 500 guests but Sheila & James chose a more intimate event. Shelia looked stunning as she walked down the isle to say “I Do.” After a short ceremony, guests mingled during cocktail hour and took in the panoramic views of the waterfront. Dinner was catered by Old Carolina Barbecue which is always delicious. The bride and groom had their first dance just as the sun was setting behind them and it was absolutely beautiful. Dancing closed out the evening and everyone had a wonderful time! Congrats Sheila & James! Thank you for choosing TKO Entertainment for your big day!
